2016 was a very crucial year in my life – I graduated from college, moved to a new city, and started work. I also learned a lot during this journey and I’m going to share them with you today. It is a mixture of fun and serious things : ) This is a collab with Jen – you can see her poem about what she learned this year here.
I never understood how much I needed alone time until I started working. After a long day of work, all I want to do is relax and do my own things. I enjoy having time to myself to cook, watch Netflix on my bed, and sip on some tea.
Reading is actually quite nice
If you know the middle school and high school me, you probably know that I used to hate reading – I dreaded reading assignments. After entering the real world, I’ve grown to appreciate reading. I even wrote a blog post about one of the books I read!
The power of networking
Networking is a big part of my job, because making connections with people who are in the same industry as me is very important. I am on my current project because I networked my butt off when I started working back in early August. If you are genuinely interested in what someone is doing, reach out to them, and you’d be surprised how helpful they will be.
Miles and reward points
As a consultant, I travel a lot of work. I’ve been traveling back and forth between New York City and Milwaukee for a few weeks, and have accumulated a lot of miles and hotel reward points. Tip: SPG points are connected with Delta, Marriott, and Uber, so you accumulate points faster!
Packing cubes are a lifesaver
I mentioned above that I travel a lot for work, and packing cubes are seriously a game changer. It makes everything so much more compact, so you can pack a lot more stuff in a small carry-on.
The difference between college and real life
It’s a huge difference. I no longer get to wake up at noon during the week and have Fridays off. I also don’t have the energy to stay up until 4am for no reason. I quite like having a routine though : )
Surround myself with people who make me happy
I was very homesick when I first moved to New York City, and I knew exactly who I could count on to make me feel better. Whether they were a phone call away or could see me in person, they made me feel safe and happy. That was when I realized that is is very important to know who you can count on to cheer you up.
Some people aren’t meant to be in your life forever
Going along the lines of the above, if someone in your life does not make you happy, it’s okay to let them go. Not everyone you meet is meant to stay in your life forever, even if they used to be your friend. It takes a lot of courage to let someone go, but it will make you happier : )
Chromecast is a great invention
It just is. I use my own so often. In fact, I’m using it right now as I’m writing this blog post. I have vlogs playing on the TV and I’m here typing on my laptop. It makes multitasking so much easier!
Hobbies can help me be happier
Hobbies are things that we choose to do, and we get the most gratification from experiences we’ve chosen for ourselves. I noticed that in particular about myself and a close friend. We all developed new hobbies this year and our hobbies made us happier.
I need to be flexible
I am a huge planner. I love to plan things, write to-do lists, to-buy lists, all sorts of lists. However, I get disappointed when plans don’t work out. Don’t get me wrong, planning is important, but sometimes I need to be more flexible. Sometimes maybe even not plan anything at all and just go with it!
New York dollar pizza is bae
When you come to New York City, try it, you will not regret it.
The best bubble tea in the world
I had Boba Guys for the first time a few months ago and it is THE BOMB. The bubbles are so chewy and if you love matcha, you HAVE TO go try. I heard the lines in San Francisco are always really long, but there is rarely a line at the one in New York City.
Buying coffee everyday is a lot of money
Going along with the food-related thoughts, I’m going to talk about coffee. I admit, I am addicted to coffee. However, buying a cup of coffee everyday is a lot of money, because it adds up real quickly. Four bucks per cup per day for 365 days is $1460!! The three ways I try to save money on coffee is to make my own peppermint mocha, use my Keurig, and get free coffee at the office.
I am still working on this, but have definitely improved. I keep a document of my spendings, cook rather than eat out, and shop (a little) less. It is a work in progress, and I hope by the end of next year I will have a way better system.
Using my willpower
Ego depletion is the concept that everyone has a limited amount of willpower, so you should focus on a few goals at a time rather than trying to meet all the goals. There are definitely times when I try to do too many things at once and end up being so drained from everything. It’s important to not spread yourself too thin and focusing on a few goals will help you be less stressed and more likely to reach your goals.
