This weekend was my birthday weekend and I am very thankful to have spent it with my friends. For my birthday, I wanted to doll up a bit with my go-to curls, which are a lot easier than they seem – it only takes me about 10-15 minutes (and I have a lot of hair). These curls really pull any look together and make you seem like you put wayyy more effort than you actually did.
I like to do my makeup before I do my hair so I don’t have to mess up my hair when I pull it back to do my face. I will do another post in the near future to talk about the specifics of my everyday makeup routine, but for now, my go-to lip product has been this Kat Von D lipstick! Now moving on to the hair 🙂
I usually wash my hair every other night. To prep my hair for the next day, I spray my damp hair with amika’s Bombshell Blowout Spray and have been using amika’s Mighty Mini Dryer to blowdry my hair. Yes, I know it’s a travel size, but it’s really light and has a lot of strength : ) I really like that the blowout spray adds shine to my hair and you can even use the spray on dry hair for added texture!
I begin by brushing out my clean, dry hair and applying the amika Heat Defense Serum to prep my hair for heat. After applying the serum, I tie the top section of my hair up in a bun (because I have a LOT of hair) and split the bottom section into two sections, left and right. I then bring both sections to the front, leaving no hair behind, and curl my hair from back to front in vertical 1-inch pieces.
To get loose, effortless waves, I use the amika 1.25 inch curling wand, which is the largest barrel in their 4 piece collection. There is also a starter set if you are new to amika hair tools. Starting with the 1-inch section at the back, I wrap it around the curling wand away from my face, leaving about 1.5 inches of hair unwrapped on the bottom, and hold it for 10 seconds. I like to leave a portion of hair unwrapped on the bottom because I find that it gives a more effortless look. Next I release the section of hair from the heat and toss it behind my shoulder. Done with one piece! If your hair does not curl easily, I recommend holding it in your palm (still wrapped) for a few seconds to let the shape stay. I repeat for both sides of hair and the top section of hair until all my hair is curled. For the top section, I also work from back to front. Finally, I re-curl any pieces that I want to add some oomph to.
After all my hair is curled, I bring it to the front and brush the curls gently with my fingers. I find that using a brush is too harsh and messes up the curls. To make the look more natural, I like to go in with a straightener to straighten my “bangs” a little so it’s not too curled. For the final touch, I spray my hair with the amika Un. Done Texture Spray for some added texture and volume. If your hair does not hold curls very well, I recommend spraying some of the amika Touchable Hairspray for the curls to last all day. Now you can style it however you want to! For me, usually half up half down.
There you have it! Makeup done, hair done! I love curling my hair to spruce up the look, plus it adds a feminine touch to any outfit. I was out and about the entire day yesterday for my birthday celebrations and the curls are still intact as I write this post right now. I used to be so intimidated by curlers, but practice makes perfect! If clumsy me can do it, anyone can! Thank you for stopping by : )
Thank you amika for collaborating with me on this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
