Working from home is a blessing and a curse. It really depends on how you stay organized and motivated. It starts off feeling great because you are working in your pajamas from bed and don’t have to wake up extra early for the commute. However, over time you start to realize that work and life start to blend together and you aren’t as productive. I learned that having a schedule or some sort of routine works best for me, because it helps me stay on top of things. This routine is my morning routine for when I am just working from home, not working at a cafe or going to the office. For those who are wondering, I am a data science consultant : ) Let’s begin!
Waking up at the same time every day is crucial to having a schedule. I have not always been a morning person and am still definitely not a morning person, but I’m getting there. I love the feeling of waking up early because I find that when I do, I have more time for myself and am more productive during the day. Hopefully a few months later my body will catch up with my brain and I will truly become a morning person.
Once I wake up, I go on my phone (oops). I’m pretty sure that it’s not the best thing to do, but it’s a habit of mine to check Instagram when I wake up. I will then make my bed. Making my bed is kind of like my morning exercise and it wakes me up. It also makes me feel like I accomplished something early on in the day. Plus, it makes my place look neat and tidy. Next, I pull open the curtains and say “Good morning New York City!” just kidding it’s only in my head.
I then head to the bathroom to brush my teeth, wash my face, and put my contacts in so I can see the world. Next, I head to my desk (or vanity, it’s multipurpose) to do my simple morning skincare routine. Right now all I use is the Pixi Glow Tonic and Clinique Moisturizing Gel, that’s it!
Coffee and fooooood! I drink a cup of coffee every day and I am obsessed with using my Keurig : ) I don’t always eat the same thing for breakfast, it just depends on what I have. Today I had blueberry waffles, sometimes I have cinnamon buns, and sometimes I have oatmeal. Having some fuel to start the day is very important for me because I cannot work on an empty stomach.
While I’m waiting for my breakfast, I will change out of my pajamas. What do I change into? Comfy clothes that probably still look like pajamas, but they’re not. It is so tempting to just sit around in my pajamas all day, but doing something as simple as changing into other comfy clothes help me so much. The changing process helps me feel more put together, plus the physical activity wakes me up even more. I will usually go on my phone (again) and scroll through some blogs. When my breakfast and coffee are ready, I take my time to eat it because when I eating too quickly makes my stomach funny haha.
TIME FOR WORK
After I’m done eating breakfast, it’s time for work. While working from my bed is very tempting, I find that having a designated workspace is very important for me to be productive. My desk is kind of like the office in my studio, so when I am sitting at my desk, I turn on work mode, and when I’m done, I turn off for the day. Yes, it is the same desk where I do my makeup, but what can you do when you live in a tiny New York City studio? Make the most of it.
That wraps up my working from home morning routine! I have come a long way from working in pajamas from my bed to this routine. It not only helps me stay productive, but also makes me happier that I am “adulting”. While I do not work from home every day, having this routine for when I do helps me start the day on a positive note. What is your morning routine like?
